Zanzibar began its existence in 1992 in Liberty Plaza at 1714 G Street, NW, one block from the White House. We were formed as a niche venue catering primarily to the international clientele who worked close by at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and to customers who appreciated the richness of cultures unlike their own. At the time, our music format was exclusively “world-beat.” We played hit tunes from the Caribbean, the African Diaspora and Latin America, and featured live shows with artists from those areas.

In 1998, Zanzibar moved to 700 Water Street, SW, our current location. We became Zanzibar on the Waterfront, purchased and renovated our building and opened for business in May, 1998. We expanded our music and entertainment concept to include house, hip-hop, neo soul and old school R&B, and quickly became Washington, DC’s premier entertainment destination.

We are now known world-wide, primarily because of the diversity of our entertainment. No other venue in Washington has remained as stable or as popular for so long.
